Understanding unconscious bias

Introduction
This module aims to explain the meaning of "unconscious bias". The concept of the module is also to help the learner understand how unconscious biases arise and how to recognize them in their own behaviour. This publication highlights the causes of exclusionary behaviour and the actions that everyone should take to minimize the risk of it occurring in themselves. Understanding the causes is crucial, because the implementation of preventive measures depends strongly on it.
Learning outcome(s): At the end of the module you will be able to:
- learn the meaning of the term "unconscious bias"
- understand how unconscious biases are created
- learn how to recognize your own unconscious biases and how to make them less likely to appear in your life

- recognize the stages of the recruiting process where Unconscious Bias can be observed and expressed
- identify Unconscious Bias in yourself and the organization
- use various methods and tools to avoid Unconscious Bias in the recruitment process when migrants and people with a migration background are involved
Unconscious bias in the workplace

This is important not least because there may well be benefits for companies from becoming aware of culturally induced unconscious bias..
Learning outcome(s): At the end of the module you will be able to:
- be more aware as an individual on how to deal successfully with (cultural) unconscious bias,
- be more aware as an organisation on how to deal successfully with (cultural) unconscious bias,
- be more aware of the benefits on the individual and organisational level when managing successfully (cultural) unconscious bias.
