Introduction
In order to be able to control bias at work we have to be aware that in a small and/or medium-sized company not only might local people work, but also people from other cultures and different customs. Due to this fact, we should consider the following question: “Why is it difficult for migrants to access labour market”? and “What can companies do to make access easier for people from migrant backgrounds?”
People from other cultures have different customs and a different way of thinking linked to their country of origin, the influence of which can persist long after they have left the country. This can affect their approach to work and it is considered bad practice to think that they should be integrated into the workplace in the same way as the locals, regardless of their own backgrounds.
That is why, throughout this module we will look at the impact the stereotypes and beliefs relating to nationality and ethnicity can have at work, how to identify them and how we can be able to manage and deal with them.
Learning outcome(s): At the end of the module…
- Be able to see the impact of unconscious bias in the workplace from the perspective of migrants and of people from migrant backgrounds in particular
- Be able to identify unconscious bias at the workplace
- Be able to manage and deal with unconscious bias at the workplace
